I was chatting on the phone today with my buddy Nick Savoy, the president and CEO of Love Systems — one of the few companies in the “seduction coaching” business that we respect here at Mack Tactics, where we’ve taught thousands of guys worldwide how to get girls on a new level.

I’ve known Savoy for years — he gave an amazing interview for my program on dating younger women. I also give him props for appearing on The Tyra Banks show, and Dr. Phil, and going toe-to-toe with these TV heavyweights to explain and defend why programs like ours help men to succeed with women.

Hey, women are practically trained since BIRTH in how to attract and land “Mr. Right” — why shouldn’t guys have their own resources and tools to learn how to get girls, right?

Anyway, Savoy was filling me in on a killer new book they recently put out at Love Systems, Routines Manual Volume 2, which I’ll be telling you more about soon.

We rapped about a bunch of topics, and one in particular that we had a good time with was Phone Game: the approach that men should take when they call a girl for the first time, to try to line up a date.

The truth is, most guys don’t have a clue about how to call a girl for the first time.

Instead, they place a ridiculous amount of importance on WHEN they should call her!

“Umm, well, I can’t call her TOO SOON…she might think I’m desperate!”

“But I should probably call her within the next three days, right? Otherwise she might forget who I am…”

“I should call her right now, but what if she’s busy…naw, I should probably wait until tomorrow, yeah?”

It reminds me of a scene in “The 40 Year Old Virgin.” Steve Carrell’s character (the virgin) miraculously manages to get a woman’s phone number, and his male co-workers are all throwing him (very bad) advice about how to proceed.

“Well, how long should I wait until I call her?” Carrell asks nervously.

“When’s the next Olympics?” replies one of his pals (played by Seth Rogen).

The funny thing is, guys spend so much energy worrying about when they should call the girl. But rarely do they stop to think what they should say when they do call her!

I watch a LOT of movies, so this conversation then reminded me of a scene in another kick-ass movie: “Swingers.” Remember that horribly awkward, cringe-inducing scene where John Favreau’s character (Mike) gets a girl’s phone number and tries calling her?

The answering machine picks up, and he tries to leave a message…

“Uh, hey, what’s up, this is Mike, we met earlier…anyway, I just wanted to say it was good to meet you, and I thinking maybe sometime we could…”

And then, BEEEEEP…the answering machine cuts him off.

So he calls back and tries again. Sounding even more awkward this time. The machine cuts him off AGAIN.

So he keeps trying, leaving these embarassing, long-winded messages, and getting cut off, until finally the girl on the other end PICKS UP THE PHONE.

She’s been listening to this horror-show whole time. She tells him, “don’t ever call me again” and hangs up.

Mike’s already-shaky confidence is now completely obliterated!

Savoy and I agreed on this: it’s not about whether you should wait 24 hours, or 48, or until the next friggin’ Olympics (which, by the way, is highly unadvisable). It’s about two things:

1. Having a gameplan in mind when you call her. The purpose of this call is not to chit-chat and talk to her about how her day went, nor is this your opportunity to hang on the phone for two hours and exchange your biographies and your hopes, dreams and troubled childhoods. It is to propose a time and a place for you to see her again, and make it happen.

2. It’s about selling her on this idea. You want to sound enthusiastic. (Not like a hyperactive spaz, but you’re in a positive, upbeat mood and you want to invite her to do something really fun and cool — and you give her the specific details of when and where it’s going to happen. In other words: you’ve already got an awesome plan in motion and this is something she won’t want to pass up.)

When I’m out at a bar or club and I get a girl’s phone number, and I need to leave (or she needs to leave), I’ll text her 30 minutes later and reference a joke we shared earlier — something that immediately lets her know who I am.

Maybe something I teased her about. (Using “teasing” tactics is very effective when you’re flirting with girls, as I explain in the Mack Tactics book.)

Or, maybe I gave her a funny “nickname” while we flirting. This is another great way to create a “hook” that makes her remember you when you text her and refer to her by her nickname.

I’ll send her a short text, reminding her of something funny, and then I’ll finish with ”text me when u get home, just want to make sure u get home safe.”

Women love this. You’re showing that you’re a protective guy who looks out for her. 9 times out of 10, I get a text later that night from her — letting me know she got home safe. Then I can reply, “Sleep tight. Call u tomorrow.”

At this point, I am going to wait 48 hours to call her, just so I can seem “cool” or “non-desperate?”

Hell no! I told her I’m going to call her tomorrow, right? So that’s what I do. And then I take it to the next stage with her.

You can also use this Tactic when you GET her number.

As you program her name and number into your phone, tell her, “what’s a good time to call you tomorrow?”

She’ll tell you! Problem solved. She told you a good time (when she won’t be working, or sleeping, or otherwise occupied), and so you call her then.

But the machine keeps cutting him off in mid-sentence. So he calls back, again and again, trying to finish what he was saying – until she suddenly picks up on the other end and tells him to never call again, blowing Mike’s fragile self-esteem to pieces.

Guys, don’t be like Mike. Here are some tips for you on mastering your Phone Game, which is an essential part of your dating success.

First, a note on getting a girl’s phone number: don’t ask permission. Don’t make a big deal out of it. Make exchanging numbers seem like a completely natural step. After around ten minutes of conversation, take your phone out of your pocket and tell her,

“Let’s exchange numbers, we should continue this conversation sometime.” Don’t wait for a “yes” or “no.” Just start programming her name in.

Even better, mention there are some parties/events coming up that you want to let her know about. This makes you sound socially savvy and plugged in, a characteristic of Alpha Men.

“Let’s swap numbers, there are some cool parties coming up that I want to let you know about.” (This is an appealing offer. Doesn’t every girl want to be in the social loop?)

If you’ve laid the proper groundwork, she’s going to go with your flow. She’ll give you her number, and you’ll give her yours. As the man, you’ll be the one to make the first phone call—but swapping numbers, rather than just getting hers, makes it feel like a fair exchange.

Now, as you program her number in, say “I’ll have some free time on _____ (name the day of the week two days from now). What’s a good time to ring you?”

This eliminates any worries about disturbing her while she’s in the middle of something, or calling too soon. (Most guys fear that if they don’t wait long enough to call, they’ll appear desperate. This is nonsense. Find out when she’s available to talk two days from now, and call her then.)

NEVER ask permission for a girl’s number. As I explain in my best-selling seduction guide Mack Tactics, a woman’s response is usually going to based upon the signals you are sending. When you ask permission (“Do you mind if I get your number?” “Would you like to go out sometime?”), you’re demonstrating weakness, and giving her the opportunity to decline. In many cases, she will — because when it’s a guy they don’t really know yet, women have far more reasons to say “yes” than “no.”

Maker her go with your flow, and you won’t encounter this resistance. You are comforting her with the idea that swapping numbers is a natural, harmless thing to do at this point in the conversation.

Now, when you pick up the phone and dial her number, here are other tips on how to call a girl:

1. No matter who answers the phone, announce who you are: “Hi, this is Mike. Is Sarah there?” This demonstrates confidence, and if a housemate or family member answers, you’ll establish rapport with them. This can come in handy later if you meet them.

2. If they tell you she’s not home, just ask for her to call you back. Don’t go into any sort of explanation or mention that you want to make plans with her. It will only make her feel embarrassed when they relate the message to her.

3. Never call to chit-chat. Only call to plan a date with her, and have the gameplan already in mind. Keep the phone call under five minutes. You’ll have plenty to talk about when you meet again in person. Once the date has been set, tell her you’re looking forward to seeing her and politely end the conversation.

4. Talk slowly and sound cheerful and relaxed. Your tone is very important. If you sound anxious and talk too fast, you’re going to come off as desperate and over-eager.

5. If she doesn’t answer, don’t leave a message. In most cases she’ll screen the message and “forget” to call back. Make the call in the afternoon, and if she doesn’t pick up, call again in the evening. In Vegas, it’s especially important to find out what she does for a living and ask “when is the best time to ring you,” because a lot of women work night shifts and sleep during the day.

Waking her up and having to apologize sucks! (If you don’t get her on the line in your first two attempts, try again two days later. Still no answer? Forget her and move on, unless you’ve also got her email. I’ll get to that in a moment.)

6. Don’t send her a text message instead of calling her. This is an obvious impersonal wuss move, and the flirty energy and tone of your voice is important for making her feel comfortable saying “yes” to the date.

7. So what about email? In this day and age, it does make a lot of sense to get her email as well as her phone number. Women are far more likely to respond to an email than a voicemail message.

Here’s how to do it: instead of asking for her number, ask her if she’s got an email address. Notice the phrasing; you’re not asking for her address, you’re asking if she’s got email – sounds completely non-threatening. This prompts her to write down her email for you. (Remember to always carry a pen.) As she does this, say “oh, write down your number, too.” Again, this sounds smooth and harmless.

Now you’ve got two ways to contact her. I suggest calling first. If you can’t get her on the line, send her a brief, friendly email. Don’t propose a date; just ask her when a good time to call is. When you connect on the phone, that’s when you’ll lay out the plan and make it happen.
